The time period in which Spurgeon ministered was characterized by spiritual decline, compromise, and humanism. Many ministers believed they needed to become relevant to the culture and Spurgeon was thought to be archaic and crude. Spurgeon did not seek out conflict but, for the sake of truth, he often found himself embroiled in it. The greatest of these conflicts was known as the Downgrade Controversy, a battle which Spurgeon fought till his death.
